Fryer and McCollum named top Class B and C soccer players; 22 others also named All-State

The honors for Section 1 girls soccer players and coaches keep pouring in with none bigger than Bronxville’s Caitlin Fryer and Haldane’s Bailey McCollum being named the top players in New York State in Class B and  Class C, respectively.

The University of Miami-bound Fryer had 20 goals and seven assists for the state-champion Broncos.

McCollum, a junior, had 20 goals and 18 assists for the state-champion Blue Devils.

Bronxville’s Don Cupertino, Haldane’s Gary Van Asselt and Somers’ Paul Saia were all named state coach of the year, Saia after leading Class A Somers to an undefeated season and its first state soccer championship.

Twenty-two other local players received All-State honors.BRENNA BROWN

First team honors

Senior Julianna Cabrera of  Class AA state runner-up North Rockland was named to the Class AA first team.

Somers junior Hannon Eberts, The Journal News Westchester/Putnam girls soccer player of the year, made the Class A first team.

Joining her on that squad are sophomore teammate Melina Couzis, Byram Hills junior Carly Barnett and Pearl River junior netminder Lauren Gallagher.

Fellow goalie Charley Warble of Bronxville is on the Class B first team with Fryer.

Besides McCollum, the Class C first team includes her teammate, sophomore defender Missy Lisikatos.

Second team honors

Second-team honors in Class AA went to teammates Amber Alfonzo and Taylor Aylmer, both juniors from North Rockland. Alfonzo is The Journal News Rockland girls soccer player of the year.

In Class A, Byram Hills junior Kelsey Goldring (36 goals, 18 assists) was named to the second team.

Somers defender Michelle Wienecke made the second team in Class A.

The second team in Class B includes Valhalla senior Vanessa Romero (37 goals, 14 assists) and Bronxville senior Lucy Kohlhoff.

Seniors Allie Monteleone (Pace-bound for basketball) and Sara Jacoby of champion Haldane were named to the Class C second team.

Third team honors

Third-team All-State honors went to Byram Hills junior Jessica Kennett in class A.

Seniors Shayna Levy of North Salem and Grace Orr of Briarcliff gained the third-team award in Class B.

Fourth team honors

Mamaroneck junior Erin McClave was named fourth-team All-State in Class AA and Pearl River senior Annie White gained that honor in Class A.

Fifth team honors

Ossining seniors Abby Squirrell and Jalay Knowles, who are heading to college lacrosse (Squirrell to Marquette) and basketball (Knowles to Hartford), were recognized with fifth-team All-State girls soccer honors in Class AA.

All-State designation comes from the New York Sportswriters Association and the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports.
